EmmacouldnotfeeladoubtofhavinggivenHarriet’sfancyaproperdirectionandraisedthegratitudeofheryoungvanitytoaverygoodpurpose,forshefoundherdecidedlymoresensiblethanbeforeofMr.Elton’sbeingaremarkablyhandsomeman,withmostagreeablemannersandasshehadnohesitationinfollowinguptheassuranceofhisadmirationbyagreeablehints,shewassoonprettyconfidentofcreatingasmuchlikingonHarriet’sside,astherecouldbeanyoccasionfor.ShewasquiteconvincedofMr.Elton’sbeinginthefairestwayoffallinginlove,ifnotinlovealready.Shehadnoscruplewithregardtohim.HetalkedofHarriet,andpraisedhersowarmly,thatshecouldnotsupposeanythingwantingwhichalittletimewouldnotadd.HisperceptionofthestrikingimprovementofHarriet’smanner,sinceherintroductionatHartfield,wasnotoneoftheleastagreeableproofsofhisgrowingattachment.
“YouhavegivenMissSmithallthatsherequired,”saidhe“youhavemadehergracefulandeasy.Shewasabeautifulcreaturewhenshecametoyou,but,inmyopinion,theattractionsyouhaveaddedareinfinitelysuperiortowhatshereceivedfromnature.”
“IamgladyouthinkIhavebeenusefultoherbutHarrietonlywanteddrawingout,andreceivingafew,veryfewhints.Shehadallthenaturalgraceofsweetnessoftemperandartlessnessinherself.Ihavedoneverylittle.”

Harrietwasonthepointofleavingtheroom,andonlystopttosay,withaveryinterestingna?veté,
“Oh!dear,no,never.”
Nosoonerwassheoutofsight,thanEmmaexclaimed,
